Track II diplomacy, also referred to as "backchannel diplomacy" has become a tremendous asset in the world as the current geopolitical situation has become very complex. Governments are shouldering more complicated challenges including disinformation, cyber warfare, climate, infectious diseases, natural disasters, irregular migration, food shortages and people smuggling. These issues place an added burden on traditional diplomacy and give rise to opportunities for non-state actors to contribute to conflict resolution and cooperation. Although never a replacement for Track I diplomacy, Track II, where possible, should be implemented with the support of governments and international organizations.
